Auckland Central's loss was a pretty sad event for Labour, and Helen Clark. The new MP is Nikki Kaye from National:
Auckland swung strongly towards National in the election, with a 6.9 per cent jump in its share of the party vote to 49.7 per cent - helping it pick up three seats from Labour plus the new seat of Botany.
Ms Kaye reflected the Auckland Central electorate's changing demographic towards a younger, more highly educated crowd.
But it seems that for some on the other side it is a very happy occasion worthy of enormous effort and sacrifice. How else can you explain Whaleoil's latest video? The dialogue is pretty funny!
Judith Tizard will be spending more time with her family.
Worryingly for common sense, Nikki Kaye describes herself as bordering on an environmentalist:
"I know I did win a couple of booths on Waiheke [Island], which is very historic for us," said Ms Kaye, who described herself as "pretty passionate" about the environment.
Of course there is nothing wrong with caring about nature. But when it degenerates into ranting about global warming, peak oil, save the whales, etc. it is dangerous and expensive stuff. Maybe she is keen on trees and fresh air, rather than the nuttier causes.
Let's hope this doesn't mean the government will fill up with environmental types. We have enough of them in the wild.
